In tennis, a volley is a shot that a player is able to hit before the ball can bounce on the ground. Usually, a player can hit a volley when he stands near the net. However, there have been instances where a player was able to hit a volley farther back in the middle of the tennis court or near the baseline.

The main objective of hitting a volley is for the player to go on the offensive and to cut his opponent’s reaction time. By hitting a volley, the player also eliminates the possibility of bad bounce in case the surface is uneven like in some clay courts.
