The game of tennis as we know it today had its beginnings in the United Kingdom during the 19th century. It was then known as lawn tennis. The game became a favourite of the upper-class English-speaking population before its popularity spread around the rest of the world. Today, tennis is an Olympic sport and it is played by people of all ages. The rules of the game have changed very little since the 1890s. However, the tiebreaker was adopted in the 1970s and, due to instant replay technology, a point challenge system is now in use in professional tennis which allows a player to challenge the official call of a point during a match.
