Mixed doubles matches are similar to the doubles games, but this version of tennis requires that a team must be composed of one man and one woman. In Europe, the game is usually played with the woman hanging back on the baseline while the man charges to the net and volleys or smashes every shot he can manage.

The woman works behind him and lobs the ball back whenever one shot gets past her partner. In the United States, the woman is positioned at the net and hits every shot that comes near her. The man is left to cover all of the back court and plays all the overheads that go deeper than the service line.
