In the sport of tennis, there are four Grand Slam tournaments which make up the most important tennis events during the year when it comes to world ranking points, the amount of prize money, public and media attention, and game tradition. Originally, to win a Grand Slam meant that a tennis player had to be victorious in all major tennis competitions during one calendar year. A number of players have been able to accomplish this feat such as Rod Laver and Steffi Graf. Later, the International Tennis Federation declared that the term Grand Slam would mean that the player holds all four major tournament titles at the same time regardless of the calendar year.

So far, in singles tennis, only female players have been able to bag a non-calendar year Grand Slam. These athletes are Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams. There is also a Career Golden Slam, where a player has to have won all four Grand Slam tournaments as well as an Olympic gold medal during his or her career. In singles, Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi have been able to accomplish this. Sisters Serena and Venus Williams have also earned a Golden Slam in doubles.
