The French Open is held in Paris between the middle of May and early June. It is the second of the Grand Slam tournaments. Players compete against each other on clay courts, a surface known for slowing down the ball and producing a higher bounce compared to grass courts or hard courts.

Due to this slow-playing surface, the French Open is considered to be the most challenging and the most physically demanding of all tennis tournaments in the world. A novelty of the French Open is that since 2006, the tournament begins on a Sunday, with 12 singles matches played on all three main courts.
