Tennis is played on a court which is a firm rectangular surface with a low net that is stretched across the centre. This same surface can be used to play both doubles and singles tennis. Four main types of tennis courts exist. These are classified according to the materials that are used for their surface. There are clay courts, hard courts, grass courts, and indoor courts with surfaces composed of synthetic materials like carpet, rubber or wood. Each of these different playing surfaces have special characteristics which are factors that can affect the playing style of a game.

The four Grand Slam tournaments are played on different surfaces. The Australian Open uses Plexicushion while the French Open courts use clay. Players compete on grass courts in Wimbledon, and the US Open has courts made of DecoTurf. Some tennis players excel in specific types of courts. They are able to use the court’s characteristics to complement their strengths and skills, and give them an advantage in their game.
