Courts made of clay are considered to be slow because the balls bounce higher and slower, which makes it difficult for players to hit shots. There are two different kinds of clay used for such courts. Red clay courts are made from crushed brick. They are then covered with a topping of other crushed particles. This type is most commonly found in Europe and South America.

Green clay, or American clay, shares some similarities with red clay, but it is slightly harder. It is packed to create the sub-surface and then covered with a topping. Although clay courts are cheaper to construct compared to other types of courts, their maintenance costs are higher.
