The backhand shot is struck from the non-dominant side of the body when the player brings the racquet across his body then swings it away from his body in the direction where he wants the ball to go. This kind of shot is considered to be more difficult to master compared to the forehand. The shot can be made using either one or both hands.

Using two hands allows easy access to power and control over the shot which provides the player with an advantage on powerful shots. Using just one hand, however, can generate a slice shot which applies a backspin on the ball to produce a low trajectory bounce.
