The first of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the Australian Open is held every January. The tournament is notorious for being held during the middle of the Australian summer where playing conditions can be affected by the heat and the humidity. In fact, the Australian Open has an extreme heat policy that is applied at the referee’s discretion when temperatures reach dangerous levels.

Ongoing matches are allowed to continue until the end of the set then suspended until the heat conditions improve. Competitors play on a court of Plexicushion, which is a cushioned, medium-paced, acrylic surface. Plexicushion replaced the Rebound Ace surface which had been used since 1988.
